FAQs – Corporate Careers

Q. Will I be contacted after I apply for a job?
A. All job applicants will be mailed a letter confirming receipt of their application. Some candidates may be contacted to set up an interview.

Q. How much will I be paid?
A. Each position has a specific salary range that is current with market standards. All new employees are provided a salary within this range dependent on previous skills, experience and capabilities. We provide typical annual increases as well as promotional and probationary increases. These dollar amounts vary based on position, performance and market conditions. Payment is made bi-weekly by direct deposit.

Q. Will I receive benefits?
A. All new full-time employees must complete a 3-month probationary period before qualifying and becoming eligible for the Head Office health benefit flex plan. A comprehensive package will be forwarded to all employees to ensure they understand the plan and select benefit coverage that is suitable for their needs. The program includes such coverage as health, dental, eye insurance, short & long term disability, etc.

Q. What hours of work apply to this job?
A. Most employees work a 37.5 hour work-week from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. There is limited flexibility provided for specific personal appointments and individual needs which is approved on a case-by-case basis by each manager.

Q. What is the dress code at Head Office?
A. Head Office employees wear business casual attire from Monday to Thursday. Casual dress is permitted on Fridays if employees are not meeting with outside guests or visitors. Casual dress does not include torn jeans, muscle shirts or rag ended shorts.

Q. How will I be trained?
A. Head Office employees will experience a full-day orientation session when they commence employment. All employees spend some amount of time at a Corporate retail store in Kitchener to understand how their position is affected by store operations. The training time spent in the Corporate store will vary depending upon the depth of training required by each position. M&M Food Market is committed to ongoing training and educational initiatives including public and in-house workshops/seminars as well as traditional college and university courses. This is treated on an individual basis and will be determined based on the need for each position. Health and wellness workshops and lunch and learn courses are available at no charge to all employees and are typically provided during lunch hour.

Q. How will my performance be measured?
A. The organization requires that all employees and their supervisors complete two performance reviews each year. Both the employee and supervisor set measurable goals. Each six months, past performance is recorded and potential new goals are set.

Q. How do I learn about company culture?
A. All new employees participate in an orientation session to gather or learn information about company philosophy and practices. General guidelines are provided to ensure that all employees are aware and understand company standards and policy.


FAQs – Store Employment

Q. Will I be contacted after I apply for a job?
A. Franchisees at each store will determine whether to contact job applicants or not. However, Head Office does encourage Franchisees to confirm receipt of job applications on a regular basis.

Q. How much will I be paid?
A. All new employees are provided an hourly rate that is current with market standards. Each Franchisee determines the hourly rate scale for their store. Typically, employees will experience an increase after their training period is complete (3 months) and then annually thereafter. These dollar amounts vary based on position, performance and market conditions. Payment is typically bi-weekly by direct deposit or cheque format. Hourly rates differ from province to province.

Q. Will I receive benefits?
A. All full-time employees who have worked 30+ hours per week for a 6 month period qualify and become eligible for the store employee health benefits plan. Franchisees will pay a minimum of 50% of the premiums of this plan. A comprehensive package will be forwarded to all employees to ensure they understand the plan and select benefit coverage that is suitable for their needs.

Q. What hours of work apply to this job?
A. Part-time employees work less than 30 hours per week, and full-time employees work 30+ hours per week. All stores are open 7 days per week, with hours varying from 9am - 9pm during the week and usually 9am - 5pm on Saturdays and 11am – 5pm on Sundays and holidays. All employees are expected and hired to work a variety of shifts during the day, afternoon, evening and weekend. There is some flexibility provided for specific personal appointments and individual needs which is approved on a case-by-case basis by each Franchisee or Store Manager.

Q. What is the dress code at M&M Food Market stores?
A. Store employees must abide by our corporate uniform policy which includes a variety of M&M branded shirts, vests and sweatshirts. Some Franchisees may pay for the cost of the uniform shirts. All employees are expected to wear khaki, black or navy pants and comfortable rubber-soled shoes. Please speak to the Franchisee directly about the specifics of this policy in each store.

Q. How will I be trained?
A. Store employees immediately begin Level 1 Certification when they are hired at an M&M Food Market store. This involves an on-line learning tool alongside hands-on personalized training by the Franchisee or Store Manager. A maximum time of 3 months is allowed for employees to complete Level 1 Certification. This ensures they feel comfortable behind the counter with their level of product knowledge, store operational and general company information. All employees will receive a certificate, pin and M&M MAX card which entitles them to 15% off their home store, when they complete this training program. M&M Food Market is committed to ongoing training and educational initiatives including in-house workshops and seminars based on new products, programs, marketing campaigns and promotional events.
